Baya Mahieddine (1931-1998)
Born in 1931 in Bordj El Kiffan, Algeria,
She was orphaned at an early age before being spotted by Marguerite Caminat at the age of 11, who encouraged her to develop her artistic talent.
Her pictorial universe, imbued with vivid colours and dreamlike forms, draws on her Algerian heritage, depicting majestic women and an abundance of nature.
Revealed by André Breton, she began exhibiting in Paris in 1947, quickly winning over the art scene with her singular style, and asserting her place among the major figures of modern art. She passed away in 1998 in Blida, Algeria.
